Florida DMV Checklist for New York Movers

Moving from New York to Florida is the most common interstate move in the country. Once the truck is unloaded, the next clock starts: Florida law gives new residents 30 days to get a Florida driver's license and 10 days to register a vehicle. Here's the exact checklist — documents to bring, fees to expect, and the rules that trip up most NY transplants.

  • Vetted and reviewed moving providers
  • One mover by default — no auctions
  • Compare up to three only if you choose
  • No spam or dozen-company runaround

What counts as 'establishing residency' in Florida

Florida's 30-day and 10-day clocks start the day you do any of the following: accept employment in Florida, enroll your children in a Florida public school, register to vote in Florida, file for a homestead-tax exemption, or operate a business in the state. The day you close on a house or sign a long-term lease is typically when the clock starts in practice. If you're a snowbird splitting time, the clock doesn't start until you do one of the residency-triggering acts.

Step 1 — Get your Florida driver's license

Make an appointment at any Florida tax-collector office (most counties run DMV services through the tax collector — appointments fill up 2–6 weeks out, so book as soon as your move date is set). Walk-ins are accepted in some counties but expect a long wait.

Bring all four document categories:

  • Primary ID — US passport, original certified birth certificate, or naturalization certificate
  • Proof of Social Security number — SS card, W-2, or 1099
  • Two proofs of Florida residential address — Florida lease or mortgage statement, utility hookup, Florida bank statement, Florida voter card, or homestead exemption receipt. P.O. boxes do not count.
  • Your valid New York driver's license — to be surrendered

What happens at the appointment: vision and hearing screening, photo, signature, fingerprint, and a paper interim license. Your permanent REAL ID card arrives by mail in 7–14 business days. Cost is $48 for the license plus a $6.25 service fee at most offices.

Step 2 — Get Florida auto insurance BEFORE you register

You cannot register a vehicle in Florida without showing a Florida-issued insurance ID card. Florida requires $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL) at minimum. Most NY carriers (GEICO, State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Progressive) will rewrite your policy on the Florida side — call them with your new address and ask for a Florida ID card emailed before your registration appointment.

One important catch: Florida does not require bodily-injury liability for most drivers, which is why minimum-coverage premiums look cheap. Most insurance brokers strongly recommend carrying at least $100K/$300K BI liability anyway — Florida has more uninsured drivers than NY and higher accident frequency in the major metros.

Step 3 — Register your vehicle and get Florida plates

Same tax-collector office, often the same appointment. Bring:

  • Your new Florida driver's license (or proof you've applied)
  • Original out-of-state title (or current registration if the title is held by a lienholder)
  • Florida insurance ID card
  • The vehicle for a VIN verification (a Florida law-enforcement officer, FL notary, or DMV employee can verify; most tax-collector offices do it on site)

Expected fees: $225 new-resident "initial registration fee" (one time, first vehicle only), $77.25–$85.25 standard tag fee (varies by weight class), title transfer fee ~$77.25, plus county sales-tax reconciliation if you owe any. Total out the door for a typical sedan: $420–$500. SUVs and trucks run higher because of weight class.

What New Yorkers consistently get wrong

Driving on your NY license past day 30. Florida treats this as driving without a valid license — a non-criminal traffic infraction the first time, but it voids any auto-insurance claim where you were the driver.

Showing up without two proofs of Florida address. A lease alone isn't enough. Bring a utility hookup, a bank statement, or a Florida voter card as the second proof. The most common second proof: have your bank mail you a Florida statement before the appointment.

Skipping the insurance step. Florida tax collectors will not register a vehicle on an out-of-state insurance card. Email yourself the Florida ID card from your carrier before the appointment.

Forgetting REAL ID requirements. If you want a REAL ID–compliant license (required for domestic flights from May 2025 onward), the primary-ID and SSN documents must be originals — no copies, no expired passports.

Special cases

Leased vehicles. You need the leasing company's permission to retitle in Florida. Call the lessor first; they will fax or email a power-of-attorney form to the tax-collector office.

Vehicles with NY loans. The lienholder holds the title. Florida will accept your current NY registration plus a lien-status letter, then send the new Florida title to the lienholder.

Specialty plates and personalized tags. Available at the same appointment for an additional $15–$25 annual fee plus a one-time personalization fee.

CDL holders. Florida exchanges Class A/B CDLs without retesting, but you must show your federal medical card (DOT physical) at the appointment.

Don't forget the other 'new Floridian' updates

  • Voter registration — register at the tax-collector office during the same appointment (free)
  • USPS change of address — file before you move (see our USPS change of address guide)
  • Homestead exemption — file by March 1 of the year after you move in; saves $750–$2,500/year in property tax
  • Cancel NY registration and plates — return plates to NY DMV by mail to stop the NY insurance requirement; otherwise NY will suspend your NY license over the lapse
  • Update IRS, banks, brokerages, employer payroll — none of these update automatically

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to get a Florida driver's license after moving from New York?

Florida law gives new residents 30 days to obtain a Florida driver's license once you've established residency (such as accepting employment, enrolling kids in school, or filing for homestead exemption).

Do I have to surrender my New York license?

Yes. Florida is a one-license state — you must surrender your NY license when you receive your Florida license. The Florida DHSMV reports the surrender to NY DMV automatically.

Can I keep my New York plates after moving to Florida?

Only for 10 days after establishing residency. Florida requires you to register your vehicle and get Florida plates within 10 days, and you must show proof of Florida insurance (PIP and PDL minimums) before you can register.

How much does a Florida driver's license cost in 2026?

$48 for a Class E (standard) original license, plus a $6.25 service fee at most tax-collector offices. A REAL ID-compliant license is the same price; expedited mailing is extra.

Do I have to take the road test if I already have a valid NY license?

No. Florida waives the road and written tests for new residents with a valid out-of-state license. You only need a vision and hearing screening, which is done at the appointment.

Do I need a Florida address to apply?

Yes. You must show two documents proving Florida residential address (lease, mortgage statement, utility bill, voter card, etc.) plus one proof of identity (passport or birth certificate) and one proof of Social Security number.
