Small Long-Distance Moves: Should You Choose U-Haul, PODS, or Professional Movers?
By Moving Ranger · Published
What is the cheapest way to move a small apartment or a few rooms of furniture to another state? Renting a U-Haul or booking a moving container may seem like the obvious answer. Before you reserve either, get a written estimate from a professional moving company.
Movers will not necessarily be cheaper than U-Haul or PODS, but they may be once you compare the complete costs. Even when prices are similar, having professionals handle loading, transportation, and unloading may be worth considering.
For a small long-distance move, the best choice depends on your inventory, route, dates, access conditions, and how much work you want to handle yourself.
Why Long-Distance Truck Rental Prices Vary by Location
The cost to rent a moving truck is not determined by distance alone.
U-Haul states that one-way rental prices depend on truck size, pickup location, destination, and move date. The rate includes a specified allowance of miles and days. Source: U-Haul truck rental FAQ
That means a friend's inexpensive rental on another route does not establish what your move will cost. Get pricing for your actual ZIP codes and dates.
Also, do not confuse an advertised local starting rate with the cost of moving out of state. U-Haul distinguishes local rentals from its route-specific one-way rentals. Source: U-Haul DIY costs
U-Haul vs. Movers: Compare More Than the Rental Price
A truck rental provides the vehicle. You still need to plan the driving, fuel, loading, unloading, and any overnight stops.
Depending on your circumstances, your DIY moving budget may include:
- Truck rental, applicable taxes, and fees
- Fuel and tolls
- Loading and unloading help
- Dollies, furniture pads, and supplies
- Selected rental protection
- Additional days or mileage
- Extra accommodations associated with driving the truck
U-Haul's own budgeting guide identifies fuel, supplies, optional coverage, and travel accommodations as costs to consider. Source
Budgeting for Moving-Truck Fuel
For a cautious planning scenario, the table below uses $0.50 per mile for fuel.
| Driving distance | Fuel budget at $0.50 per mile |
|---|---|
| 500 miles | $250 |
| 1,000 miles | $500 |
| 1,500 miles | $750 |
| 2,000 miles | $1,000 |
| 2,500 miles | $1,250 |
| 3,000 miles | $1,500 |
This is a budgeting assumption, not a U-Haul charge or a prediction of actual fuel spending.
For a personalized calculation, use:
Trip miles ÷ expected miles per gallon × fuel price per gallon.
U-Haul lists its 10-foot truck at an estimated 12 MPG under ideal conditions. Actual mileage varies with load, grades, weather, and speed. Source
Count only expenses that apply to you. If you would drive your own car regardless, compare that cost with driving the rental truck rather than treating the entire trip as an additional expense.
Why Small-Load Long-Distance Movers Are Worth Pricing
Moving less does not eliminate the expense of renting and driving a truck the full distance.
Small-load moving services offer another option for studios, one-bedroom apartments, partial households, and selected furniture.
For example, TSI offers consolidated long-distance service for small shipments. Mayflower's Snapmoves serves apartments and partial household moves, with loading, transportation, and unloading included in its base services. TSI source Mayflower source
These examples establish that professional small-move services exist. Whether they cost less for your shipment depends on the written quotes.
Ask about minimum charges and scheduling. A small shipment may still have a minimum price, and a shared or consolidated service may require delivery flexibility.
PODS vs. Movers: Can Professional Moving Cost Less?
Sometimes. Neither option is always the less expensive choice.
PODS' published comparison lists NYC-to-Los Angeles costs of $5,102–$5,449 for PODS and $4,017–$8,234 for full-service movers. The overlapping ranges illustrate why comparing both can be useful.
These are June 2026 estimates for a two- to three-bedroom household, excluding insurance and taxes—not small-load prices or current quotes for your move. PODS also states that its service generally costs less than full-service movers. Source
When reviewing a container quote, check transportation, delivery, pickup, rental duration, protection, and any separately arranged labor.
PODS states that pricing depends on container size and quantity, distance, timing, and season, and that its quotes include 30 days of storage. Source
If you need storage and time to load, those features have value. If you need hired help at both addresses, include that cost before comparing the container with movers.
Moving Horror Stories: Risks Beyond the Price
Reported problems are another reason to examine responsibilities and protection. Individual incidents do not show how often problems occur, and professional movers also face theft, damage, and delays.
A Loaded U-Haul Stolen During a Cross-Country Move
In March 2026, KSL reported that a couple moving from Utah to Florida had their U-Haul truck and trailer stolen during an overnight stop in Albuquerque. Police located suspects with help from tracking devices, but most belongings were already gone, according to the report. It did not establish fault by U-Haul. Source
What to consider: overnight parking, theft protection, and keeping essential documents and irreplaceable valuables with you.
A PODS Container Towed From an Apartment Complex
In November 2025, WSOC-TV reported a renter's allegation that PODS missed a collection deadline, after which her apartment complex had the loaded container towed.
PODS said property approval was the customer's responsibility. It also said it retrieved and redelivered the container as a goodwill gesture, with no towing fees charged to her. Source
What to consider: written placement permission, property deadlines, and confirmed pickup arrangements.
Protection Does Not Cover Every Kind of Damage
PODS states that its Contents Protection Option excludes damage caused by improper packing or normal shifting. Its Container Only Option does not protect the belongings inside. Source
What to consider: who packs and secures the shipment, which protection you select, and what the exclusions mean for your belongings.
How to Compare Interstate Moving Quotes Fairly
Give every provider the same inventory, dates, addresses, and access details. Mention stairs, elevators, parking restrictions, long carries, and specialty items.
| Compare | Rental truck | Moving container | Professional movers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving | You arrange | Provider transports | Provider transports |
| Loading and unloading | You or hired help | You or hired help | Confirm inclusion |
| Fuel | Budget separately | Check transport charges | Check estimate |
| Packing | You or added service | You or added service | Confirm inclusion |
| Storage | Arrange if needed | Check included duration | Request terms and price |
| Protection | Review coverage | Review coverage | Review valuation options |
Request a written estimate with services and charges clearly identified. FMCSA explains that adding belongings, services, or unforeseen access circumstances can require a revised binding estimate. Source
What Is the Best Way to Move a Small Load Out of State?
A rental truck may suit a low-cost route when you can manage the labor and driving. A container may be useful when you need storage or extra loading time. Professional movers may make sense when you want help handling the shipment—or when their complete price is competitive.
Movers do not have to be the cheapest option to be worth considering. Compare the money, time, effort, and responsibilities involved before deciding.
